ST. THOMAS – The Department of Public Works (DPW) recently commenced temporary repairs on the second floor of its office building in Susannaberg, St. John. The project scope includes wall and flooring demolition, wall installation, utilities and raceways, kitchen and bathroom case work and fixtures, installation of new electrical, communication and data wiring systems, termite control and a new mechanical system. The department utilized local funds to ensure that employees who were dislocated after the 2017 hurricanes have a safe and suitable working environment.
The project officially mobilized on February 7 and is scheduled to be completed May 17. Demolition is complete, and the contractor, J. Benton Construction, LLC, is currently installing interior stud walls and preparing the exterior staircase. The department is working with FEMA to attain additional funding to complete permanent repairs.
“The St. John office was damaged in the aftermath of the 2017 hurricanes,” said Derek Gabriel, DPW Commissioner Nominee. “The department is committed to ensuring that the appropriate repairs are completed and our DPW team has a safe environment to serve the community.”
