The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works is updating the community on the progress of two of the five bridge projects on St. Croix. At the East Airport Road bridge, the last abutment was poured last week, and this week, the contractor installed the arch bridge.

At the Altona Lagoon Bridge, the contractor completed tying rebar earlier this month and on Friday began pouring concrete for the deck. Approach slabs will be installed after and should be completed by mid-August.

Both bridges are expected to be open to traffic by the beginning of September.

The projects included in this update are: Phase 1 of the Queen Mary Highway Road Repairs Project; Phase 1 of The Downtown Christiansted Road Repairs Project, The St. Croix Bridge Projects, Phase 1 of the First Avenue project, and Phase 2A of the Veterans Drive Project.

The Bridge on Queen Mary Highway is in its final stages. Custom Builders has completed constructing and paving the bridge approaches on Queen Mary Highway. The contractor is expected to install guardrails along the roadway and striping will occur after. Construction at the Midland Bridge will begin once the Queen Mary Highway bridge is completed.

Phase 1 of the Christiansted Road Rehabilitation Project continues. DPW Contractor, Virgin Islands Paving Inc, has completed paving the southern section/least congested area of the Downtown Christiansted roads. The roads included in Phase 1 of the project are Prince Street, Hill Street, Queen Street, and East Street. On Queen Mary Highway, the repaved sections of the roadway are being striped. These road sections were the Sunny Isle Signal Light, Sunny Isle to Barron Spot, and Sunny Isle into Sunny Acres

Improvements to sections of Queen Mary Highway continues. Department of Public Works' contractor--Grace Civil, LLC--has completed from Sunny Isle to Barron Spot. Other sections of the project include the Sunny Isle signal light intersection, Barren Spot to La Reine signal light, and Sunny Isle to Ricardo Richards/Sunny Acres. The Queen Mary Highway project has an estimated competition date of August 2024.
