DPW CONTINUES PRIORITY ROAD PAVINGS ACROSS TERRITORY

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Virgin Islands Department of Public Works (DPW) received $22 million, from the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) of 2021, to complete several priority projects throughout the territory.

The American Rescue Plan Act of 2021 is a $1.9 trillion coronavirus rescue package designed to facilitate the United States’ recovery from the devastating economic and health effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. This Act is part of President Joe Biden’s Build Back Better plan.

Areas such as the Queen Mary Highway on St. Croix, Centerline Road on St. John, and Contant neighborhood roads on St. Thomas, are amongst the locations selected for road resurfacing projects. There are a total of 34 road projects designated for repair—17 projects on St. Croix and 17 for the St. Thomas/St. John District.

“This ARPA allocation really showcases the administration’s commitment to improving the quality of our roads, highways and drainage infrastructure across the Territory – especially as we are in the midst of our disaster recovery efforts,” said Commissioner Derek Gabriel. “This is a continued effort from the tremendous push we made territory-wide with the funds provided through Act 8454.”

The Commissioner further expounded on the DPW team being hyper-focused on developing scopes and designs over the past months to address key areas that have been in disrepair for quite a while. “Our residents have already started to see and feel these improvements and we’re encouraged that the rubber is hitting the road,” he said. “We are very excited to bring these repairs to fruition.”

Milling for the first ARPA project began on Monday in St. Croix, starting at Basin Triangle to Time Square (Sunday Market Square), and then continuing from Basin Triangle to Pueblo Supermarket. Road milling will continue until March 3rd.
