TRAFFIC SIGN INSTALLATION PROJECT PROGRESSING THROUGHOUT THE TERRITORY

U.S. VIRGIN ISLANDS – The Department of Public Works’(DPW) territory-wide signage repair project is well on its way.

In the St. Thomas/St. John district, signage replacement is 80 percent completed. According to DPW Design Program Manager Piotr Gajewski, the contractor—Custom Builders–will continue to install new signage and remove damaged signs at various locations throughout the district when the remaining signs arrive on-island.

“The contractor is currently ordering the additional signs required to complete the project,” said Gajewski. “The St. Thomas/St. John district project—totaling about $1,294,738–is scheduled for completion in May 2022.”

Meanwhile in the St. Croix district, the signage project is at the 50 percent completion mark. The selected contractor—Celestine Construction, LLC—is currently working along Route 66 in Williams Delight and along the Melvin Evans Highway. There was a slight delay in October caused by an uncleared post and sign shipment, but the project resumed in November and has a tentative completion date of March 2022. This district’s estimated project cost is $1,179,268.75. The department is presently working on a supplemental contract with the contractor.

“They are doing a lot more work in regard to maintaining some of the signs that are already there, in addition to installing new posts,” said Brad Marshall, Project Manager.

Both projects are federally funded through the Federal Highway Administration Emergency Relief Program. The department is urging motorists to adhere to all safety controls and directives when traversing near project sites.
